The Fish’s Oath: Lessons in Promise-Keeping
Folklore from North Sumatra
A Mysterious Catch
Long ago, in a fertile valley, there lived a poor young orphan who survived by farming and fishing in the nearby river. The land provided crops, while the river was rich with fish, ensuring that he never went hungry.
One afternoon, after tending to his fields, he went to the river to fish. However, despite hours of waiting, he caught nothing. Just as he was about to give up, the fishing rod suddenly jerked. He pulled it up and, to his surprise, a dazzling golden fish hung from the hook.
The Mysterious Woman
At home, he placed the golden fish in a container. When he returned, he was shocked to find the fish missing. Instead, several pieces of gold lay where the fish had been. A beautiful woman stood in his house. “I am the fish you caught, and those gold pieces are my scales,” she said.
The Oath That Must Not Be Broken
The young man asked her to marry him. She agreed on one condition: he must never reveal her true origin. They married, prospered, and had a son named Samosir.
The Naughty Son and the Broken Oath
As Samosir grew, he became mischievous. One day, he ate his father’s lunch before delivering it. Angry, his father slapped him and shouted, “You are nothing but a fish’s son!”
Samosir ran to his mother. She wept, realizing the oath had been broken. “Now, I must return to where I belong,” she whispered.
The Great Flood
Thunder roared, rain poured, and the earth trembled. Samosir and his mother vanished, and water gushed forth, flooding the valley. It became Lake Toba, with Samosir Island at its center.
